6th Grade Science
Welcome to 6th grade science class… this year we will use the “Amplify” science curriculum, which will include on-line resources, workbooks, and “kits” that contain some experiments and activities to do in class. Your grade for the class will be based on the work that is turned in… this could be a paragraph written to explain your understanding of a concept, notes taken during a class experiment or demonstration, and of course, tests and quizzes about a topic. There will be many different units of study during the year, but the main ones (including other smaller topics and related ideas) are:
- Geology on Mars
- Plate Motion
- Tsunamis
- Rocks
- Earth, Moon, and Sun
- Oceans, Atmosphere, and Climate
- Weather Patterns
- Earth’s Changing Climate
All work is expected to be turned in on time. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get the assignment(s) that you missed and turn them in the next day (when possible.) When turned in late, work will receive reduced credit. Since all work will be available on the schoology page, it is literally accessible from anywhere... even if you are sick at home, on vacation, or at someone else’s house (as long as they have internet...)
All assignments are based on points... the larger the assignment is, the more points it has. So a small assignment might only be worth a few points, whereas a large project would be worth many more. To calculate your percentage, you simply divide the number of points you earned by the number of points the assignment was worth. For example, if an assignment is worth 50 points, and you earned 40 points, that would be an 80 %. The grading scale for A’s B’s, C’s etc is provided by the district.
6th Grade Global Studies
Hello, and welcome to Global Studies class! It is called “Global Studies” because it incorporates many different topics about our world. We will learn about geography, history, civilizations of the past, some politics, and other things that you didn’t even know existed!
You will have multiple textbooks in this class, plus an atlas, which is a book completely full of maps. Each of these books will be provided “digitally,” but some are also available in hardcopy form. They can be found in the “resources” folder on my schoology page.
The day-to-day class work for Global Studies will included taking notes, filling in graphic organizers, making charts and graphs, taking quizzes about information we have learned, having class discussions, and working on some projects.
*You will occasionally have a homework assignment called “current events.” It is exactly what it sounds like: an opportunity to describe something of importance going on in our world, and to share your opinion about it. Sometimes, you will be given the article to read and write about, and sometimes you will need to find your own. These assignments will be due on the Friday of that week, with a few exceptions for short weeks. The assignments will be in Schoology for that week.
