The first several months of school the AVID classroom has had a focus on advancing college and career preparedness for the AVID Elective students at Beacon Middle School. Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a course that provides students who elect to participate with opportunities to learn about college and career pathways, and gives students an opportunity to take college campus tours.
On October 7, Autumn Reynolds, a Cape Henlopen graduate and a Cedar Crest College alumnus, spoke with the AVID classes about the pursuit of a master’s degree and how to find scholarships to assist one’s financial aid package during postsecondary education. Autumn is currently working on her M.S. in Forensic Science.
Then on October 31, the AVID Elective 7th and 8th graders traveled to Arcadia University (Glenside, PA) where they toured the beautiful campus, spoke with admissions, and ate lunch at the dining hall complex. On this trip, students interacted with current Arcadia students, asked questions about campus life and about academics, and gained insight about the many highlights of the University.
On November 14, Cape Henlopen graduate and Delaware State University alumnus, Sarah Oshoush, spoke with the students about the benefits of having a postsecondary education degree and the pros and cons of being an entrepreneur. Sarah is the owner of JVSTLashes which runs out of Dover.
